SCOPE

The principal components of the project at the beginning of 2015 are as follows:

- A state-by-state collection of miscellaneous materials relating to Irish connections in the southern US developed as part of a feasibility study for an educational/informational resource initiative in the period 2000-2005, with some later updates;

- A biography-led collection on a wide variety of Irish-born or descended professionals, artists, entrepreneurs from northern and western states based on research as part of an 'Ireland in Place' project initiative in the period 2008-2013;

- A collection of research materials on the life and context of James Hoban, the Irish-born architect and builder of The White House, including the development of Washington and the Irish contribution therein; this was developed as part of the planning and delivery of the James Hoban Commemoration 2006-8 on both sides of the Atlantic, marking the 175th. anniversary of his death in 1831 and the 250th. anniversary of his birth in 1758;

- An associated collection of materials relating to the life and work of Irish-born or descended architects and engineers in America;

- An associated collection of materials on Irish-descended US Presidents, Vice-Presidents and cabinet members, and Irish-born or descended U.S. Congress members and figures from the revolutionary period, as well some prominent Irish-born or descended federal and state officials.

A separate collection of materials relating to the city of Charleston, South Carolina, developed as part of a locally-based project but expanded to serve as an example of how the overall collection and publication philosophy could be applied to an individual location, is also housed at the Addlestone. Its development website can be accessed at http://avergeen9.wix.com/charlestonirish
