Project Reports

 

This section contains reports on the various phases of the cemetery enhancement project.

 

The first phase, completed in 2013, involved the restoration of crosses to the graves of students who had died in the period 1870-1945, and the installation of a heritage marker at the tomb of An t-Athair Eoghan Ó Gramhnaigh, the Irish language pioneer on the 150th. anniversary of his birth.

 

The second phase involved the installation of a heritage marker at the grave of Dr. Nicholas Callan in 2014 to mark the 150th. anniversary of his death, and ongoing work on the restoration of the fabric of individual graves in what is known as the 'Pioneers' Plot'. 

 

The third phase (2015-17) involved completion of the restoration of the graves, the documentation of those buried there (including the students whose graves are marked only by a numbered cross), and enhancement of the general environment of the area, including rehabilitation of the grassed areas, installation of kerbing and replacement of broken and uneven area in the circulation paths.
