The first phase of the Maynooth College Cemetery enhancement project involved minor repairs and cleaning of the O'Gramhnaigh Mausoleum and the reinstatement of Celtic crosses on 27 grave sites of students who died during their time at Maynooth. In addition, a heritage marker was placed near the O'Gramhnaigh Mausoleum to provide information on Fr. Eoghan Ó Gramhnaigh (1863-1899) on the occasion of the 150th. anniversary of his birth.

1863-76: Born and received his early education at Athboy, Co. Meath

 

1876-89: Student at St. Finian’s Seminary, then at Navan, and St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth

 

1889-91: Ordained priest and assigned as curate to Ballinacarrigy parish, Co. Westmeath

 

1891-94: Professor of Irish at Maynooth; promoter of the Irish language revival; co-founder of the Gaelic League; author of Simple Lessons in Irish

 

1894-99: Resignation and departure for America because of ill health; resided in San Francisco CA; Phoenix, Prescott and Yuma AZ; Los Angeles CA

 

1899: Died at Sisters’ Hospital, Los Angeles aged 36

 

1903: Repatriation of remains to Ireland in an event attended by 6000

 

1905: Re-interment in this mausoleum
