STUDENT BURIALS 1866-1942

The following is a list students who died at Maynooth from 1866 onwards, when the practice ceased of student burial in what are believed to have been unmarked graves, though the graves may have been identified by numbers on the individual sites, and the numbers keyed to names in records kept by the college and used to create the inscribed record on the stone panels at the entrance arch in 1907). From 1866 onwards, students were buried in graves marked by a headstone with Celtic cross, and containing in Latin the name of the student, his diocese, his age and his date of death.  The inscribed information at the entrance arch also contained a year or exact date of birth, and in some cases an indication of the canonical status of the deceased, and these details have been included in the listing where available. The ages shown are based on those given on gravestone inscriptions or calculated on the basis of the year of birth.
